Missed the last train in Tokyo? How to find a place to stay
Updated Aug 2026
Plenty of hotels accept same-day bookings even late at night. The fastest route: check availability nearest to you first, confirm the check-in deadline, then book.
1. Start with hotels near your current location
After the last train, your transport options are limited. Prioritizing hotels within walking distance beats switching areas — and even by taxi, late-night fares make a nearby hotel the better deal.
2. Always confirm the check-in deadline
Most hotels accept late check-in, but front-desk hours vary. Before booking, check how late you can check in. Hotels with a 24-hour front desk, or deadlines like 25:00 or 29:00 (Japanese notation for 1 AM / 5 AM), are the safe choices.
TOMAL marks hotels that accept late check-in with a label like “~29:30 check-in”.
3. Capsule hotel or business hotel?
If price is everything, capsule hotels and sauna facilities with overnight stays are your best bet. If you have luggage or want a proper rest, a business hotel's room-only plan works better.
A hotel with a public bath lets you soak away the night's exhaustion — check the facility icons in the search results.
4. Check the cancellation policy before booking
Same-day bookings usually carry a 100% cancellation fee, so “booking one just in case” is risky. Book once your plans are certain, or read the cancellation policy first.
