Looking for HotelTonight in Japan? Here's how it compares to a local option

HotelTonight does list some hotels in Japan. But if you want to compare across Japan's real same-day market — business hotels and capsule hotels included — you need something that searches domestic inventory. TOMAL is a free, Japan-native search that shows only tonight's available rooms, sorted by distance from where you stand.
1. Does HotelTonight work in Japan?
Yes. HotelTonight (the last-minute booking app owned by Airbnb) lists hotels in Tokyo and other Japanese cities. The selection, however, leans toward international-style, full-service hotels. Japan's same-day market is dominated by business hotels and capsule hotels, and details that matter after the last train — like late-check-in deadlines written as 25:00 or 29:00 — are not what the app is built around.
2. What TOMAL does differently
TOMAL is not a booking app — it is a search layer over Japan's domestic inventory (Rakuten Travel, one of the country's largest) that shows only tonight's rooms, sorted by distance from your current location or by price, business and capsule hotels included. If you already use HotelTonight and want an international-brand hotel booked and paid inside the app, it remains a comfortable choice. Checking both takes minutes.
4. No Rakuten account? You can still book
Every hotel page on TOMAL carries a Rakuten Travel booking link plus a link to find the same hotel on Booking.com, so travelers without a Rakuten account can complete the booking there.
